Koman Lake, Valbona and Theth in 3 Days from Tirana

Day 1Tirana – Koman Lake – Valbona

We will leave Tirana at 5:00 am to drive toward Koman Lake when the ferry departs at 9:00 am to the other side of the lake, Fierza. Since 1985 this manmade lake is the only way how locals who live in the surroundings to get in touch with the modern world.
Driving from Fierza to Valbona will needs around 45 minutes, passing through Bajram Curri, the municipality of the area. Lunch break in Valbona and hiking in Kukaj, a very remote area in Valbona Valley surroundings where we will see how the people do their living. In addition, based on the time and weather, the most adventurous part of the group, is not far from the guesthouse there is a crystal clear water pool where we can have a short dip. 

Day 2Hiking from Valbona – Theth

Also called “the Big Day” of the tour, we now set off on the thrilling hike from Valbona to Theth following the ancient path that the locals have been using for years. Back in the day, it was only possible to travel from Valbona to Shkoder on foot taking two full days of walking!
Walking on this path we will pass through the oldest part of the village where people are still living in their more than 100-year-old stone houses that are remarkable remnants of the past. In addition, this 18-km trek offers spectacular views of long rocky valleys and lush green forests. We stop for lunch at one of the traditional cafés along the way but do stock up on snacks just in case. In addition, after trekking for about 7-8 hours we arrive in Theth which will for sure amaze us with its unique nature, history, and traditions including the village’s symbol, the Lock-In Tower. Overnight and dinner at the guesthouse.

Day 3Theth – Shkoder – Tirana

After breakfast at the Guesthouse, the” Gurnas” Waterfall is the next destination for the day. Around 45 minutes walk from the center of the village they round to their pass through most of the village into soft hilly terrain.
In addition, we will leave Theth behind and driving for around 3 hours we will reach Shkoder, the biggest city in the Albanian North. Free time in Shkoder and return to Tirana in the evening when it is the end of our tour.

The tale of "accursed mountains"

With the magnificent mountain scenery as your backdrop, you’ll be sailing on Lake Koman and doing one of the most panoramic hikes in northern Albania on a historic trail from Valbona to Theth, a path that has been used for centuries for trade and exchanging goods. Furthermore,  to add to your authentic experience of Albania, you stay at traditional, family-based guesthouses where you usually get welcomed not as a customer, but rather as a family guest. In addition, as a Hut to-Hut hiking tour, we recommend packing light, as everything will be carried.

What to Expect
This 3 Days Tour of Koman Lake, Valbona, and Theth is an intensive tour, a program for participants with a good level of fitness. 
 
The first day is mainly based on driving, sailing, and a warm-up walking to explore the Valbona Valley. 
 
The Big Hike of the second day has a maximum distance of 20 Km with a maximum elevation of 1000 meters. Several Stops in rural bars before and after the peak. 
 
In addition to the next day, an exploration of Thethi village on the third day, including also a brief view of Shkodra. 

The Bags / Luggage Situation

We highly recommend packing only the most necessary items on a backpack that you will need to carry and leaving the rest of the bags either with us or at the Hotel. We can safely store it for you and deliver it back in Tirana or Shkoder. Please inform us ahead if you will need to leave bags with us.

The tour is amazing, and the locations included are so beautiful! Andi was so helpful as the tour I booked had no other people booked but he helped to sort this out for me. Kevin was the tour guide and he was really friendly and super generous. Both made my time on this trip as enjoyable as possible. The day 2 hike was difficult but so worth it for the views. Couldn’t recommend this tour or this company anymore, great way to experience Albania’s sights and local culture. 🙂

Der Trip war besonders gut durchdacht und umgesetzt. Der Tourenleiter ist stets immer auf unsere Bedürfnisse eingegangen. Beispielsweise: vegetarische Gerichte, zeitliche Flexibilität usw.
Obwohl ich wenig Wandererfahrungen bisher sammeln konnte, war ich aufgrund seiner Hilfestellungen, motivierenden Worte und Rücksicht sehr gut aufgehoben.
Jeder sollte die Tour angehen, da sie für jede Person machbar ist, auch wenn man eventuell einige Pausen einlegt. Insbesondere sind die Aussichten unabdingbar – die dürfen einem nicht fehlen.
Sowohl die Unterkünfte als auch die Restaurants waren jedes Mal sehr gut ausgewählt.
Abschließend kann gesagt werden, dass wir sehr zufrieden mit dem Tourenleiter, Essen, Unterkünfte, Zeitmanagement und den Aussichten waren.
