Dubrovnik to Skopje: Albania, Montenegro & Macedonia in 8 Days

Your adventure begins with a private transfer from Dubrovnik at 11:00. After crossing the border into Montenegro, you’ll enjoy one of the Adriatic’s most scenic coastal drives before arriving in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kotor.

Upon arrival, you’ll meet your guide and begin a walking tour through the medieval Old Town. Hidden behind impressive Venetian walls, Kotor is filled with charming squares, stone palaces, centuries-old churches, and narrow streets that tell the story of its Byzantine and Venetian past.

Highlights include St. Tryphon Cathedral, the Clock Tower, the Square of Arms, and the beautiful waterfront overlooking the Bay of Kotor, often considered Europe’s southernmost fjord.

After breakfast, travel inland to Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic royal capital. Although small in size, the town has played a central role in the country’s history for centuries.

You’ll admire the former Royal Palace, historic government buildings, and elegant embassies before visiting Cetinje Monastery, one of Montenegro’s most important Orthodox religious sites.

Later, continue to the spectacular viewpoint overlooking Sveti Stefan. Once a fortified fishing village connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, it has become one of Montenegro’s most recognizable landmarks.

The afternoon is spent exploring Budva, one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. During a guided walking tour, discover Venetian walls, marble streets, hidden courtyards, medieval churches, and lively seaside squares before enjoying some free time along the promenade.

Today’s journey follows Montenegro’s southern coastline.

The first stop is Stari Bar, one of the largest abandoned medieval towns in the Balkans. Walking through its impressive ruins, you’ll discover ancient churches, Ottoman baths, stone houses, and centuries of history preserved within massive defensive walls.

Continue south to Ulcinj, one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic Sea. Its hilltop fortress overlooks the coastline and reflects a fascinating blend of Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman influences. The panoramic views from the castle are among the finest in Montenegro.

After crossing into Albania, arrive in Shkoder, one of the country’s oldest and most important cultural centers. During the city tour, stroll along the lively pedestrian boulevard while learning about the city’s rich history and artistic traditions.

Following breakfast, travel toward Kruja, Albania’s historic mountain town and the stronghold of national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg.

Visit Kruja Castle, home to the Skanderbeg Museum, where you’ll learn about Albania’s resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Afterwards, explore the traditional Ottoman Bazaar, where local craftsmen continue centuries-old traditions of carpet weaving, wood carving, and silverwork.

Later, continue to Tirana for a guided city tour.

Explore Skanderbeg Square, admire the colorful government buildings, visit Et’hem Bey Mosque, and discover how Albania’s capital has transformed into one of the Balkans’ liveliest cities. The city’s mix of communist history, modern architecture, and vibrant café culture creates a fascinating contrast.

Overnight in Tirana.

After leaving Tirana, the journey continues to Berat, one of Albania’s most treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” Berat is famous for its white Ottoman houses that climb the hillside beneath its imposing castle.

Explore Berat Castle, where people still live within its ancient walls, and visit beautiful Byzantine churches, historic mosques, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Osum River. Walking through the Mangalem and Gorica quarters offers a glimpse into centuries of harmonious coexistence between different cultures and religions.

Later, continue south through picturesque countryside toward Gjirokaster, another UNESCO-listed city renowned for its remarkably preserved Ottoman architecture.

Spend the evening wandering the cobbled streets beneath the impressive hilltop castle before overnighting in Gjirokaster.

This morning begins with a visit to Gjirokaster Castle, one of the largest fortresses in the Balkans. Perched high above the city, the castle offers spectacular views and houses fascinating exhibits that illustrate Albania’s military and cultural history.

After exploring the Old Bazaar, continue through the scenic Vjosa Valley toward Permet.

Often called Albania’s greenest town, Permet is celebrated for its natural beauty, traditional hospitality, and delicious local cuisine. Surrounded by mountains and the crystal-clear Vjosa River, the town offers a peaceful contrast to the historic cities visited earlier.

The journey then continues through southeastern Albania toward Korce.

Known for its elegant boulevards, French-influenced architecture, and vibrant cultural life, Korce has long been regarded as one of Albania’s most sophisticated cities. After a walking tour of the Old Bazaar and cathedral area, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere before overnighting in Korce.

Leaving Albania, cross into North Macedonia and arrive in Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Situated on the shores of the crystal-clear Lake Ohrid, the city is famous for its remarkable collection of churches, monasteries, and traditional stone houses.

During the guided tour, visit the Church of St. John at Kaneo, dramatically positioned above the lake, explore the ancient theatre, wander through the charming Old Town, and admire the impressive Samuel’s Fortress overlooking the city.

In the afternoon, continue to Skopje.

North Macedonia’s capital combines Ottoman heritage, modern architecture, and grand monuments, creating one of the Balkans’ most unique cityscapes.

After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of Skopje.

Walk across the famous Stone Bridge linking the old and new parts of the city before exploring Macedonia Square, home to monumental statues and elegant public spaces.

Continue into the Old Bazaar, one of the largest and best-preserved Ottoman marketplaces in Southeast Europe. Here you’ll find traditional workshops, historic mosques, lively cafés, and centuries of multicultural history.

You’ll also visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje, and learn about the city’s remarkable transformation following the devastating earthquake of 1963.

Following the city tour, your Dubrovnik to Skopje adventure comes to an end. Guests are free to transfer to Skopje International Airport, extend their stay, or continue exploring the Balkans independently.
