Guided Tour Montenegro & Bosnia: A Journey Through Time, Stone, and Sky

Over seven unforgettable days, travel through two of the Balkans’ most captivating countries: Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Begin in Podgorica and trace a path through ancient coastal towns like Ulcinj, Stari Bar, Budva, and Kotor, where history clings to every stone and the Adriatic sparkles below.

Cross into Bosnia, where spiritual stillness meets cultural richness in Međugorje, Mostar, and Sarajevo, cities shaped by faith, resilience, and beauty.

Then retreat into nature in Durmitor National Park, where mountain lakes and quiet forests invite reflection. End your journey at the awe-inspiring Ostrog Monastery, carved into a cliffside, before returning to Podgorica — carrying the stories, landscapes, and spirit of the Balkans with you.

The tour is possible to start from other major capitals like Tirana (Albania) and Dubrovnik (Croatia) or along the way.

Itinerary

Day 1Podgorica – Ulcinj – Stari Bar

First Stop: Ulcinj – Coastal Charm and History

Our first stop will be the coastal city of Ulcinj, located right on the border with Albania. This city is one of the largest and most important for Montenegro’s economy and tourism.

During our tour of Ulcinj, we will explore both the Old Town and the lower part near the coast. Although the Old Town was damaged by an earthquake in 1979, it still holds remarkable architectural and cultural value. As you wander through its narrow streets, you’ll pass numerous cafés, restaurants, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

Additionally, in the Old Town, you’ll encounter two notable statues. One depicts the legendary Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, who—according to local legend—was once a slave here. Interestingly, some believe the character of Dulcinea from Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote was inspired by a local woman from Ulcinj.

Next Destination: Stari Bar – History on a Hill

After Ulcinj, we head to Stari Bar, a very different experience from other coastal fortress towns. Unlike those perched on the coast, this old town is situated on a hill near the base of Mt. Rumija.

As you travel through the suburbs of Bar, you’ll eventually catch your first glimpse of Stari Bar’s haunting ruins in the distance. With majestic mountains as the backdrop, it is arguably one of Montenegro’s most striking locations.

At the base of the fortress, several restaurants and souvenir shops line the streets. Here, you can find local specialties such as olive oil, pomegranate syrup, and a variety of sweets—all crafted by skilled local artisans.

Though now in ruins, the fortress of Bar once contained around 240 buildings. These included clock towers, mosques, churches, cathedrals, residences, and more. As you wander among the ruins, each stone seems to tell a story, inviting you to dive deep into the rich history of the place.

Day 2Stari Bar – Budva – Kotor

Morning: Exploring Budva — A City with 2600 Years of History

We start the day with a drive toward Budva, one of Montenegro’s most important tourist cities. Its fascinating history dates back over 2600 years.

Our tour of Budva begins in the Old Town, where we will visit the Roman Ruins and the Budva Fortress by the coast. From here, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea.

The tiny streets of Budva are very charming. It’s definitely worth spending some time wandering around and visiting some of the local shops.

Next Stop: Kotor — History Carved in Stone

Our next destination is Kotor, situated in a unique gulf that shares its name. This city has been a significant historical, strategic, and trading center since it was founded around the 6th century BC.

Kotor is like an open book of history, showing traces from many different periods. Today, much of its influence comes from the Venetian era, as the city was part of the Venetian Republic for a long time.

We begin our stroll at the Bay of Kotor and the marina. From there, we head toward the Old City, entering through the Sea Gate. This gate symbolizes the city’s resistance and liberation during World War II in 1944.

The Old City is full of charm. We will walk around its small squares, surrounded by typical quarters, and visit some of the city’s architectural and historical highlights.

Highlight: The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon
This Roman Catholic church is one of only two Catholic churches in Montenegro, where most of the population follows Eastern Orthodoxy. The cathedral was consecrated on June 19, 1166. Compared to other buildings, the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is one of the largest and most ornate structures in Kotor.

Afternoon: Castle of St. John and Panoramic Views
Our tour continues uphill toward the Castle of St. John. Walking along cobblestone paths and zig-zagging your way up, you’ll reach this fortress, which was a crucial part of Kotor’s defensive system.

The walk takes about 30 minutes from the lower gate but rewards you with one of the best views of the so-called “Mediterranean Fjords.”

Day 3Kotor – Međugorje - Mostar

Morning: Spiritual Peace in Međugorje

Today, we journey to Međugorje, a small village in Bosnia and Herzegovina that has become one of the world’s most significant Catholic pilgrimage sites. Nestled among gentle hills and vineyards, Međugorje gained international attention in 1981 when six local children claimed to have seen apparitions of the Virgin Mary. This event transformed a quiet farming community into a spiritual destination visited by millions.

We’ll visit St. James Church, the heart of the parish and a gathering place for pilgrims from every corner of the globe. Here, the atmosphere is peaceful and reflective, with daily Mass, confessions offered in multiple languages, and candlelit evenings of prayer.

Afternoon: Exploring Mostar — A City of Resilience and Beauty

After experiencing the tranquility of Međugorje, we continue our journey to Mostar, one of the most captivating and culturally rich cities in the Balkans. Mostar is where Ottoman elegance meets Mediterranean charm, and where the scars of recent history stand alongside timeless beauty.

At the city’s heart is the Old Bridge (Stari Most), a 16th-century stone arch built by the Ottomans, gracefully spanning the turquoise Neretva River. Destroyed during the war in the 1990s and later rebuilt, the bridge is more than a UNESCO World Heritage Site — it’s a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and rebirth. If we’re lucky, we might witness local divers plunging into the river below, a daring tradition that is both nerve-wracking and iconic.

We will then wander through the Old Bazaar (Bazar Kujundžiluk), a cobbled street lined with artisan stalls, traditional copperware, colorful textiles, and fragrant spices. The air is rich with the scent of Bosnian coffee and grilled ćevapi, inviting you to slow down and soak in the atmosphere.

Despite its small size, Mostar is a city of layers — of East and West, past and present, sorrow and strength. It’s a place that stays with you long after you leave.

Day 4Mostar – Blagaj Tekija – Sarajevo

Morning: Tranquility at Blagaj Tekija

We begin the day with a short but unforgettable visit to Blagaj Tekija, a 16th-century Dervish monastery nestled beneath a towering cliff. It sits right at the source of the Buna River. This serene spot is one of the most photogenic places in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Crystal-clear waters flow from a cave beneath the rock face, creating a peaceful and almost otherworldly atmosphere.

The Tekija itself blends Ottoman and Mediterranean architecture, offering a glimpse into the mystical world of Sufi Islam. Whether you explore the interiors or relax by the water with a traditional Turkish coffee, Blagaj invites quiet reflection.

Afternoon: Arrival and Free Time in Sarajevo

After soaking in the calm of Blagaj, we continue our journey to Sarajevo, the cultural and historical heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Upon arrival, you will have some free time to explore at your own pace. You might choose to stroll through the charming Baščaršija, Sarajevo’s old bazaar. Alternatively, grab a bite of local street food like burek or ćevapi, or enjoy coffee the traditional way at one of the many atmospheric cafés.

Day 5Sarajevo

Morning: Discovering Baščaršija — The Heart of Sarajevo

Today, we fully explore Sarajevo, often called the “Jerusalem of Europe” because of its incredible blend of religions, cultures, and eras. Here, mosques, churches, and synagogues stand just steps apart. This city has been the stage for multiple pivotal moments in world history.

We begin in the heart of the city — the old bazaar of Baščaršija. Walking along its narrow, cobbled streets, you’ll encounter copper artisans, traditional bakeries, and centuries-old fountains. This area feels like a living museum of Ottoman influence and local spirit. Nearby, key landmarks include the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the Old Orthodox Church, and the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Historical Turning Point: The Latin Bridge
Just across the river, near the Latin Bridge, we visit the spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in 1914. This act, carried out by Gavrilo Princip, sparked World War I. A nearby small museum brings this moment in history to life, showcasing original photos, documents, and artifacts from that fateful day.

Afternoon: The Tunnel of Hope and Reflections

In the afternoon, we focus on more recent history with a visit to the Tunnel of Hope (Tunel Spasa). During the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, this narrow, hand-dug tunnel was the city’s only lifeline. It carried supplies, connected families, and symbolized the resilience of people under constant attack.

Walking through a preserved section of the tunnel, you will hear firsthand accounts of survival and endurance. These stories are both humbling and unforgettable.

Evening: Your Time to Experience Sarajevo
You’ll also have free time to enjoy Sarajevo at your own pace. You might take in sweeping views from the Yellow Fortress, savor a traditional Bosnian coffee in one of the city’s many cafés, or pause at the Eternal Flame, a memorial dedicated to those lost in World War II.

Every street and every stone in Sarajevo tells a story. This city has known sorrow and beauty in equal measure. Today, you will feel the powerful heartbeat of a place unlike any other.

Day 6Sarajevo - Durmitor National Park - Žabljak

Into Nature: Journey to Durmitor National Park

Today, we leave the city behind and head into the rugged natural beauty of Montenegro, arriving at the breathtaking Durmitor National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its dramatic peaks, alpine lakes, and untouched forests.

Our destination is Žabljak, the highest town in the Balkans and the gateway to the park. Situated at 1,450 meters above sea level, this small mountain town offers crisp air, panoramic views, and a peaceful contrast to the urban energy of previous days.

Exploring Durmitor: Peaks, Lakes, and Wildlife

Durmitor is a paradise for nature lovers. Towering above the region is Bobotov Kuk, Montenegro’s highest peak. Below, the landscape is carved with glacial valleys, pine forests, and over 18 glacial lakes. The most famous lake is Crno Jezero (Black Lake).

We will take time to walk along the lake’s edge, following an easy and relaxing path. Along the way, you’ll enjoy unforgettable views reflected in the still, dark waters.

While exploring, you might spot wild horses, soaring eagles, or other signs of Montenegro’s rich biodiversity. This area belongs to the Dinaric Alps and features some of the most impressive scenery in Southeastern Europe.

Relaxing in Žabljak

Žabljak itself is quiet and charming, making it perfect for unwinding. You can stroll through the town, savor hearty mountain dishes like kačamak or grilled trout, or simply breathe in the pure alpine air.

Day 7Žabljak - Ostrog Monastery - Podgorica

Morning: The Awe-Inspiring Ostrog Monastery

Our final day begins with a visit to one of Montenegro’s most extraordinary landmarks: Ostrog Monastery. Built high into the sheer rock face of a mountain, this 17th-century monastery seems almost suspended in midair. It is not only an architectural marvel but also one of the Balkans’ most important pilgrimage sites.

Dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog, whose relics are enshrined here, the monastery welcomes visitors of all faiths. The peaceful atmosphere and panoramic views over the valley below create a powerful place for reflection, no matter your beliefs. The upper monastery, nestled into the cliffside, is particularly moving — quiet, sacred, and rich with history.

Afternoon: Journey to Podgorica

After experiencing this spiritual and scenic wonder, we continue toward Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital. Here, our tour concludes, leaving you with lasting memories of Montenegro’s natural beauty and cultural treasures.
