Departure from Tirana

Our Balkans adventure begins in Tirana, Albania’s lively capital. After departure, we leave the city behind and travel through the Albanian countryside toward Berat.

The route introduces you to the changing landscapes of central Albania. Mountains, valleys, agricultural areas, and traditional villages provide a scenic introduction to the journey.

Explore Berat

Our first major destination is Berat, one of Albania’s most remarkable historic cities. The city sits along the Osum River and is surrounded by mountains, creating a beautiful setting for its historic neighborhoods.

Berat is especially famous for its distinctive white Ottoman houses climbing the hillsides. Their many windows give the city its famous nickname, the “City of a Thousand Windows.”

We explore the historic center and continue toward Berat Castle, which occupies a hill above the city. Unlike many castles that survive mainly as ruins, Berat’s fortress area remains a living neighborhood.

Inside the castle complex, you can discover historic churches, traditional stone houses, and views across Berat and the surrounding landscape. The area also reflects the city’s long Christian and Ottoman heritage.

Continue to Ohrid

After exploring Berat, we continue toward the border with North Macedonia and travel onward to Ohrid.

The approach to Lake Ohrid is one of the scenic highlights of the day. The landscape changes as we reach the lake, with mountains rising around its deep blue waters.

Explore Ohrid

Ohrid is one of the most important cultural destinations in North Macedonia. Its historic center, religious monuments, and lake form a remarkable cultural landscape.

We explore the Old Town and its narrow streets, traditional houses, and historic landmarks. Depending on the route and conditions, highlights can include the Church of St. Sophia and the Church of St. John at Kaneo.

The famous Church of St. John at Kaneo stands dramatically above the lake and has become one of the most recognizable views in North Macedonia.

Ohrid has also played an important role in the development of Slavic Christianity and medieval religious culture. Its churches and monasteries preserve centuries of artistic and spiritual heritage.

Overnight in Ohrid

After a full day of sightseeing, we settle into Ohrid for the evening. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy the lakefront atmosphere and explore the historic streets at a relaxed pace.

Morning in Ohrid

We begin the second day surrounded by the beauty of Lake Ohrid. There is time to enjoy the atmosphere of the Old Town before continuing toward North Macedonia’s capital.

The route offers a different perspective of the country as we leave the lake region and travel through mountain landscapes and smaller settlements.

Travel to Skopje

Our journey continues toward Skopje, the political and cultural center of North Macedonia. As we approach the capital, the landscape gradually changes from mountain scenery to a more urban environment.

Explore Skopje

Skopje is a city where different periods of Balkan history exist side by side.

One of the most recognizable landmarks is the Stone Bridge, which crosses the Vardar River and connects the historic Old Bazaar with the central part of the city. The bridge dates back to the Ottoman period and has long been an important connection between different parts of Skopje.

We continue through the Old Bazaar, one of the most atmospheric parts of the city. Its narrow streets, traditional shops, mosques, cafés, and historic buildings reflect Skopje’s Ottoman heritage.

The city center presents a very different atmosphere. Macedonia Square and the surrounding area feature grand buildings, monuments, and public spaces that reflect the city’s more recent transformation.

We also visit the area around the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, honoring the Nobel Peace Prize winner who was born in Skopje in 1910.

Overnight in Skopje

After discovering the contrasting sides of Skopje, we spend the night in the city. The evening is free to enjoy local restaurants, cafés, and the lively atmosphere of the Macedonian capital.

Departure from Skopje

Our third day begins with a journey east toward Bulgaria. We leave Skopje behind and cross the international border into Bulgaria.

The drive offers an opportunity to observe the changing landscape and architecture as we move from North Macedonia into Bulgaria.

Arrival in Sofia

Our destination is Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital and one of the oldest cities in Europe.

Sofia has been shaped by numerous civilizations. Roman ruins, medieval churches, Ottoman-era structures, and modern Bulgarian architecture can all be found within the city.

Explore Sofia

During our exploration, we visit some of Sofia’s most important landmarks.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the city’s most impressive buildings. Its enormous domes and richly decorated interior make it a major symbol of Sofia and Bulgaria.

Nearby, we discover the Church of St. George, a remarkable Roman structure surrounded by later buildings. Dating back to antiquity, it is one of the oldest surviving structures in Sofia.

Another important highlight is the Saint Sofia Church, which gave the modern city its name. Its origins reach back to the early Christian period and reflect Sofia’s long history as an important settlement.

We also explore the central streets and public spaces of Sofia, where historic architecture meets modern cafés, shops, and city life.

Overnight in Sofia

After exploring the Bulgarian capital, we spend the night in Sofia. The evening provides an opportunity to experience the city independently and enjoy Bulgarian cuisine.

Travel to Plovdiv

Our final sightseeing day takes us from Sofia to Plovdiv, one of Bulgaria’s most fascinating cities.

Plovdiv has an extraordinary history. The city has been inhabited for thousands of years and was shaped by Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian cultures.

Explore the Ancient City

One of Plovdiv’s most famous landmarks is its Roman Theater. Built during the Roman period, the theater remains remarkably well preserved and is still used for cultural performances today.

From here, we continue through the Old Town, where cobbled streets lead between colorful Bulgarian Revival houses. Many of these historic homes feature distinctive wooden details, enclosed balconies, and richly decorated interiors.

The Old Town also offers beautiful views across the modern city and surrounding hills.

Discover Plovdiv’s Cultural Heritage

Plovdiv is not simply a historic city. It is also one of Bulgaria’s major cultural centers, known for its galleries, creative spaces, cafés, and artistic atmosphere.

The city’s combination of ancient ruins and vibrant modern life makes it a fitting final destination for our Balkans Tour.

Return to Sofia

After exploring Plovdiv, we return to Sofia, where the official sightseeing portion of the tour concludes.

Day 4 drop-off: Sofia.

For travelers who need transportation back toward North Macedonia or Albania, we offer a driving-only drop-off in Skopje or Tirana on Day 5 at no additional cost. These transfers are intended as transportation only, so no sightseeing or guided activities are included during the return journey.
