Tour of Kosovo, Montenegro & North Macedonia in 3 Days from Albania

This guided tour of the Western Balkans is the quickest way to gain a vivid overview of North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro. On this tour, you will have the chance to visit at least two cities in each country, starting in North Macedonia.

We begin in Skopje, a museum-like city well known for its numerous statues, and continue to the idyllic town of Ohrid, beautifully set on the shores of the “Lake of Light,” often referred to as the Jerusalem of the Balkans for its rich cultural and religious heritage.

Entering Kosovo, the atmosphere begins to feel more oriental, with the strong aroma of grilled food and hearty breakfasts found everywhere. You will journey across the youngest republic in Europe, with visits to Prizren and Pristina.

The tour then continues to Montenegro, starting with Kotor, often called the “Little Venice” of the Western Balkans. We proceed to Budva and end the day in Shkoder. All three cities are excellent examples of fine Western-influenced architecture.

Itinerary

Day 1Tirana - Ohrid - Skopje

Departure from Tirana to Ohrid
We start the day early at 07:00, leaving the vibrant capital of Albania, Tirana, behind, heading northeast toward the stunning landscapes of North Macedonia. The road winds through Albania’s northern valleys, giving glimpses of both the country’s modern industries and its timeless rural villages.

Ohrid – The Jerusalem of the Balkans
Upon arrival in Ohrid, you’ll immediately feel the city’s unique atmosphere: a fusion of lake serenity, ancient churches, and cobblestone streets. Nestled on the shores of Ohrid Lake, one of the oldest lakes in the world, the city is famous for having once hosted 365 churches—one for each day of the year—earning its nickname “Jerusalem of the Balkans.”

Highlights include:
Old Town & Samuil Fortress: A climb up to the fortress rewards you with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, offering a glimpse into the strategic importance of Ohrid through the centuries.
Kaneo Bay & St. John Church: This iconic bay, with its small church perched dramatically on the cliffside, is one of the most photographed spots in the Balkans. The scene is so picturesque it inspired the very first postcards of the city.
Lower City & Religious Harmony: Stroll through the streets where Orthodox and Islamic traditions have coexisted peacefully for centuries, a true testament to the region’s history of tolerance.

Afternoon: Drive to Skopje
We continue toward Skopje, North Macedonia’s dynamic capital, a city where modernity and history collide.

Skopje – The City of Statues
Skopje has earned the nickname “The Memorial City of Statues,” with monuments covering every corner of the city. Walking along the Vardar River, you will notice how bridges connect the old and new parts of the city, symbolizing Skopje’s layered history.

Highlights include:
Main Square & Iconic Statues: Marvel at massive statues celebrating historical figures and cultural icons.
House of Mother Teresa: A tribute to Skopje’s most famous daughter, whose humanitarian legacy is celebrated worldwide.
Old Bazaar: Explore centuries-old markets, artisan shops, and cozy cafés.
Religious Diversity: Visit the Church of St. Clement of Ohrid and Mustafa Pasha Mosque, reflecting the city’s centuries-long tradition of religious coexistence.

Overnight in Skopje.

Day 2 Skopje - Prsitina - Prziren - Shkoder

Morning: Skopje to Pristina
Leaving Skopje, we cross into Kosovo, heading toward Pristina, the country’s modern capital. Despite its contemporary feel, Pristina is layered with history dating back to the Vinča culture of the Old Stone Age, making it one of the region’s most fascinating archaeological sites.

Highlights include:
National Library: An architectural wonder with an intriguing geometric design.
Cathedral & Old Neighborhoods: Explore the blend of Ottoman, Serbian, and modern influences that shape the city’s character.

Afternoon: Pristina to Prizren
Next, we head to Prizren, Kosovo’s cultural capital, a city that seems frozen in time. Nestled on the banks of the Bistrica River, under the watchful eye of Prizren Castle, the city played a pivotal role in the 19th-century Albanian independence movement.

Highlights include:
House of the Prizren League & Ethnographic Museum: Learn about the historic effort to form a parliament and government advocating Albanian autonomy.
Stone Bridge of Love & Sinan Pasha Mosque: Stroll across this charming bridge and through the surrounding historical bazaar, alive with handcrafts, spices, and local perfumes.
Traditional Lunch: Savor authentic Balkan dishes in the heart of the old town.

Evening: Prizren to Shkoder
We return to Albania and arrive in Shkoder, the historic capital of Northern Albania. Known for its legendary Rozafa Castle, Shkoder is a city of myths, history, and vibrant lakeside views.

Highlights include:
Rozafa Castle: Learn the legend of Rozafa and enjoy sweeping views over the rivers and lake below.
Shkoder Lake: Perfect for a peaceful stroll along the largest lake in the Balkans.
Local Life & Humor: Enjoy the friendly atmosphere and witty banter of Shkoder’s locals, reflecting the city’s unique character.

Overnight in Shkoder.

Day 3 Shkoder - Budva - Kotor - Tirana

Morning: Shkoder to Budva (Montenegro)
Depart from Shkoder and drive along the Adriatic coast toward Montenegro. The journey is filled with rugged coastlines, hidden coves, and picturesque beaches.

Budva – Adriatic Gem
Budva is a small but captivating city with 2,600 years of history. Its old town, perched on the coast, offers a delightful blend of Roman, Venetian, and medieval architecture.

Highlights include:
Old Town & Budva Fortress: Wander narrow streets, visit Roman ruins, and enjoy spectacular views of the Adriatic from the fortress.
Local Shops & Streets: Explore artisan shops and charming cafés in the heart of the old town.
Lunch: Taste traditional Montenegrin seafood or Balkan specialties.

Afternoon: Budva to Kotor
Drive further along the coast to Kotor, a city shaped by its strategic location in a dramatic fjord-like bay. Kotor’s history dates back to the 6th century BC, and the influence of the Venetian Republic is still visible in its architecture and narrow, winding streets.

Highlights include:
Bay of Kotor & Marina: Enjoy the lively waterfront and watch the reflection of the city on the calm bay waters.
Old City & Sea Gate: Walk through the iconic gate that symbolizes Kotor’s resistance during WWII.
Historic Quarters: Explore squares, old churches, and palaces that tell stories of Kotor’s centuries-long strategic importance.

Evening: Return to Tirana
After a day of coastal exploration, we drive back to Tirana, bringing the tour full circle. The scenic drive along Albania’s northern landscapes gives time to reflect on the rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty experienced over three unforgettable days.
