With a total length of 105 Km walking distance in 8 Days, the Peaks of the Balkans Itinerary is one of the most “glorious” trails of Balkan and southeast of Europe.

This Peaks of the Balkans trail offers to its participants the chance to get lost in the wildest paradise of Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. If you have ever wonder to sail through the steep canyons, when waters runs throw, hiking back in the time in the heart of Alps and Accursed Mountains this tour brings it nearer to you. The tour combines the amazing wild nature with the generosity of welcoming locals and Sheppard’s. You will be welcomed to step as a visitor but leave as a Local!

What to Expect

During all the Peaks of the Balkan trail and Accursed Mountains you will have a proffetional guide assistance. 

In this tour you will experience the best wild life and Nature of  North Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. 

The hiking trail starts in Valbona (Albania) and will ends in Theth (Albania). All the nights are planed in traditional guesthouses (shared rooms). For private rooms please Contact Us

This 8 days intensive tour along the Accursed Mountains  requires a good physical shape. Please find in the bottom of the program the gears list that are necessary for the tour.

  • Tirana - Komamn Lake - Valbona Valley
  • Valbona - Cerem (18 Kilometers Long walk)
  • Cerem - Doberdol (15 Kilometers Long walk)
  • Doberdol - Malishevc (18 Kilometers Long walk)
  • Malishevc - Babino Polje (14 Kilometers Long walk)
  • Babino Polje - Plav - Vusanje (20 Kilometers Long walk)
  • Vusanje - Theth (21 Kilometers of walk)
  • Theth - Tirana

First DayTirana – Koman Lake - Valbona

We will leave Tirana at 5:00 am to drive toward the Koman Lake when the ferry departs at 9:00 am to the other side of the lake, Fierza. From the 1985 this manmade lake is the only way how locals who lives in the surroundings get in touch with modern world.
Driving from Fierza to Valbona will needs around 45 minutes, passing through Bajram Curri, the municipally of the area. Lunch break in Valbona and hiking in Kukaj, a very remote area in Valbona Valley surroundings when we will see how the people do their living.

Second Day Valbona – Cerem

Cerem will be the main destination of the second day. Well known for its healthy blackberries, makes it the biggest exporter of the Region. The trail from Valbona to Cerem goes through the “Persllopi Valley” and takes with a length of 17 Kilometers. Accommodation and overnight in Cerem.

Third Day Cerem – Doberdol

Located in-between high peaks Doberdol has been for centuries a Sheppard summer camp. It is where they brings their cattle for 4-5 months per year. Walking is relatively easy , around 15 kilometers. It will takes around 6-7 hours and will make the second day more relaxed. Picnic lunch in the way to Doberdol.

Fourth Day Doberdol - Malishevc (Kosovo)

In addition the next destination will be Malishevc. Located in the Kosovo territory, it is known for its amazing nature and natural spring lakes. The fourth day trail takes around 7-8 hours of walk in a 18 kilometers long path.
The trip offers spectacular views into the wields parts of Balkans Peaks and Accursed Mountains of Albanian and Kosovo.

Fifth Day Malishevc - Babino Polje (Montenegro)

Hiking from Kosovo to Montenegro we walk through plenty of history and legends, very common for this region. The trek goes through stunning mountains areas, rich with water resources and glacial lakes . The today’s journey is around 17 kilometers long and takes around 7-8 hours of walk with a maximum uphill of 100 meters. The trail has been used for ages as a connection bridge between this region and Shkodra, a city with a big economic and political role in history.
Overnight in Babino Polje.

Sixth Day Babino Polje - Plave (Montenegro) - Vusanje, (Montenegro)

After leaving the guesthouse, we walk for a cold and refreshing morning shower in the cold lake of Hrid Jezero, known also as the “The Lake of Good Luck”. According to an old legend, swimming in its icy cold waters brings good luck in marriage. To be proved !
Walking through beech forest, the trail offers amazing view of Albanian Alps. With a 20 kilometers length and a maximum of 710 meters uphill the today’s trail has a lower difficulty level.
Afternoon break near the Lake of Plav. Accommodation in a traditional guesthouse.

Seventh DayVusanje - Theth

Today’s hike is around 16 kilometers long with an uphill of 1050 meters. We will walk in between the steep mountains where back in the days was the military border between the Communist Albania and Former Yugoslavia. We will face plenty of concrete Bunkers, the most common Albanian souvenir from the past.
The view is breathtaking. Below our feet will be Theth, a village with a lot of history and culture. Its symbol, the “Lock in Tower” is a live proof of the past and history.
Overnight in Theht.

Eighth Day Theth - Tirana

After the breakfast at the Guesthouse, the Gurnas Waterfall is the next attraction. Around 45 minutes walk from the center of village the round to their pass through most of the village into a soft hilly terrain.
Leaving Theth behind and driving for around 3 hours we will reach Shkoder, the biggest city of the Albanian North. Free time in Shkoder and return in Tirana in the evening.
