UNESCO Sites in Montenegro – Kotor, Durmitor Park and Stecci

Traveling into Montenegro, you will be absolutely amazed by its amazing, picturesque nature and rich history and heritage. The UNESCO SITES in Montenegro are a mix of Historical and Natural Sites. Starting with probably the best city to visit, Kotor, Medieval Stecci and Natural park of Durmitor, where you can find plenty of activities like hiking, river rafting and more while you explore the park.

Kotor's Historical Region and Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries

Kotor is without a doubt one of the most gorgeous places in the Adriatic. It is only designated as a cultural landmark. In Montenegro, the Natural and Cultural-Historical Region of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1979, it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was, nonetheless, placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Danger list until 2003.

The historic town of Kotor is included in the Natural and Cultural-Historical Region of Kotor. It makes up a significant part of this cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site. The medieval cityscape is filled with preserved and renovated structures in the old town, which is situated within the city walls. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, which dates from the 12th century, is one of the most notable structures in Kotor today.

The city wall is an example of a fortification construction constructed during the Venetian period. The outside wall is 4.5 kilometers long and has a circumference of 4.5 kilometers. It’s also regarded as one of the most impressive instances of Venetian military construction. These defenses are, in fact, an important part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK

Durmitor National Park is one of Europe’s most beautiful nature reserves. Formed by glaciers and located high in the mountains but near to the sea. The towering peaks provide an eagle’s eye perspective of the turquoise glacial lakes, while the canyons and woodlands appear to go on forever.

Durmitor National Park is a nature lover’s dream come true, with a plethora of activities. While the coastline and beaches may draw the majority of visitors to this section of the Balkans. Durmitor is perhaps the greatest spot in Montenegro for trekking.

Stecci–Medieval Tombstones Graveyards

On July 15, 2016, at the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee in Istanbul, the Steci–Medieval Tombstones Graveyards were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Steci’s inclusion on the World Legacy List was the culmination of six years of preliminary work by specialists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia on the Nomination File.

This serial transnational property includes a selection of 4,000 medieval tombstones (stećci) that were chosen based on the state of preservation of the monuments, preservation measures implemented in the countries.
